Activities of the 46th International Conference and AGM of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE) tagged “Abuja 2016” and with the theme “Development and optimization of Nigeria’s Solid Mineral Sector for National Economic Growth – The role of Chemical Engineering” and which was hosted at the Yar’ Adua Centre, in Abuja, kick started on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at the IBB Golf club with a ceremonial Golf Tee – off by NSChE President, Prof. Emenike Wami at about 2.30pm, and a competition involving members of the Golf Club and members of the NSChE.
A solid minerals stakeholders forum was also held at the the Yar’Adua centre which was quickly followed at around 5.10 pm with a press conference where the president of the NSChE, welcomed the delegates to the conference and the journalists present, he also gave a brief run down on what to expect during the conference and hinted that discussions will be centered mainly on the theme of the conference. He stressed the importance of the mass media in disseminating the communiqué produced at the end of the conference. Questions were entertained from the members of the press who came from media houses such as Sun Newspaper, Thisday Newspaper, FRSC, Guardian Newspaper, and NTA.
A cocktail party was also organized at wood Bridge Garden at 7pm to round off the activities of the day.
The second day began at about 9.10 am on Friday 18, November 2016 in the Main Auditorium of Yar’Adua Centre, with plenary session1 which was chaired by Engr. Anyaoku and lead papers by Prof. A. S. Ahmed and Prof S. Mohammed. This was was followed by a tea/coffee break.
The opening ceremony which commenced at about 10.35 am in the main auditorium of the centre with the National Anthem; this was followed by opening prayers and the introduction of the chairman of the event Dr. Ogbonnaiya Onu FNSChE FAEng, the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology who was represented by Dr. Dan Azumi Ibrahim and other guests followed thereafter
Engr. Onochie Anyaoku, FNSChE, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) gave a welcome address which was followed by an address by the President of the Society Prof. Emenike Wami FNSChE who recalled that The Society had organized a conference pon solid minerals development 18 years ago and communiqué submitted to the government but nothing was done on the recommendations, he however hoped that the resolutions of this conference will be used by the government as the realities of Nigeria’s Economy had made exploring solid minerals an imperative.
A keynote Address on “Development and optimization of Nigeria’s solid minerals for National Economic Growth” was delivered on behalf of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, The Honourable Minister of Mines and Steel by Prof Onyejekwe, the special assistant on Solid minerals to the minister
Hajiya Aisha Abubakar, The minister of State for industry, trade and investments who was also the guest speaker at the event was represented by Engr. Fatah Y. Ntipai and he delivered a speech on “The Investement Opportunities in the solid minerals sector in Nigeria”. on her behalf.
Alhaji Shehu Sanni, the President of the Nigerian miners Association was alsoa special guest at the event.
The vote of thanks was given by Prof. Sam Adfefila- The Deputy National President of NSChE . The Special guests also visited the exhibition stands of the exhibitors at the conference.
The technical sessions continued after the opening ceremony, and all activities for the day ended at around 5.45pm
Activities of the third day composed mainly of the technical sessions, the AGM of the society which started at about 3.00.pm, and it featured the election of new executives for the NSChE, and they include:

Engr. Anthony Akuvie – Internal Auditor II
The AGM also featured a brief report on the activities of the Secretariat building Committee by Engr. Jide Soyode, The Chairman of the committee, who indicated that work had already commenced on the site of the Secretariat Building which will be located in Lagos Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, The anticipated completion date of the first phase of the project which is a bungalow is scheduled for November 2017.

A dinner/ induction of fellows which commenced at about 7.30pm where 10 fellows and 1 Honorary fellow were inducted rounded off the activities of the conference and AGM.
